Allergens to Consider When Crafting Your Menu

It’s your party, and you get to choose it all. However, when selecting your menu, be mindful of your guests’ allergies.

There's more than 160 foods that can cause allergic reactions in people with food allergies, the law identifies the eight most common allergenic foods. These foods account for 90 percent of food allergic reactions, and are the food sources from which many other ingredients are derived.

The eight foods identified by the law are:

  1. Milk
  2. Eggs
  3. Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod)
  4. Crustacean shellfish (e.g., crab, lobster, shrimp)
  5. Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans)
  6. Peanuts
  7. Wheat
  8. Soybeans

Though you don’t need to completely modify your menu to fit everyone’s dietary restrictions, be sure to have alternatives for the guests who may have food allergies or preferences. This isn’t to say you can’t have all your favorite food items, because you can choose whatever you’d like to serve! Just make sure to incorporate a few substitutes for anyone who needs those options.
