Candy Cane Cream Cheese Danish

Ready to get baking?

Check out this 20-minute holiday candy cane danish recipe!

It is often said that the little things are what mean the most in life. And in many cases, that is definitely true, especially for getting into the holiday spirit! Decorating the Christmas tree, cozying up in the candlelight, and bundling up in fuzzy sweaters are some of the most beloved traditions of the season. What is it about these activities that makes them so special? They bring out all the holiday cheer!

Another way of doing this is with delicious food made with love and shared by the whole family. And when those winter recipes are simple, quick, and high-quality, bringing that holiday cheer to your home has never been easier!

Brighten your winter mornings at the table with a heartwarming and homemade holiday candy cane danish!

How to Make a Candy Cane Cream Cheese Danish

Let’s get this recipe rolling by going over the ingredients you will need for this recipe. To make a warm and flaky candy cane danish, you will need pre-made crescent roll dough, cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and a jam of your choice. You can experiment with the flavor of your danish by using different flavored jams. However, if sticking to the holiday theme is more your style, a sharp raspberry or tangy cherry jam will add that classic candy cane red to your winter pastry.

This seasonal snack is equally easy to prepare and delectable! To begin, preheat the oven to 375º F. While it is warming up, line a baking sheet with parchment paper before unrolling the crescent dough to spread into a single layer.

Use a spoon to dollop cream cheese into the center of the dough and smear it down the length of the pan. Refer to the image below to get an idea of how it should look. No one wants to bite into a flaky treat expecting a flavorful filling only to discover nothing inside at all! This method ensures an even distribution of flavor throughout the entire danish.

If the dough is tugging too much while you are spreading the cream cheese, allowing the cheese to soften may make the process easier.

Next, repeat the same step with the jam you have selected for your candy cane danish. You can put as much or as little of these fillings as you’d like, just be aware that too much filling may require extra time to bake properly.

After spreading the cream cheese and jam filling, the next step is to shape the dough. Using a pair of kitchen shears or a sharp knife, carefully cut a fringe into either side of the dough sheet.

Cut horizontally into the length of the dough about 2-3 inches deep, and repeat with around 1 inch of space between cuts. For more guidance, take a look at how we’ve done this step in the picture below!

Next, take one of the newly cut sections and fold it diagonally over the filling. Take another section of dough from the opposite side and place it diagonally across the filling, as well. Repeat the process, alternating sides each time, to create a braided pattern with the pastry dough.

Once you have finished braiding the danish, carefully maneuver one end of the pastry so that it faces the same direction as the other. This is what will give your holiday pastry its festive candy cane shape!

Now that your pastry is prepared, it’s ready for baking (and your oven should be, too, at this point). Place the baking sheet into the oven to bake for around 15 minutes. When you notice the filling beginning to bubble and the crescent dough beginning to golden, it should be ready to remove.

In the meantime, prepare the sweet, sugary glaze. Combine the powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. Adjust the amount of powdered sugar or milk as needed to form a thick, syrup-like consistency.

Allow for the danish to cool before drizzling the sugar glaze on top.

Table & Thyme’s Candy Cane Cream Cheese Danish Recipe

Wake up the right way this holiday season with a cup of hot, fresh, energizing coffee and a homemade holiday danish!

Ingredients

  • 1 roll crescent roll dough
  • Cream cheese
  • Jam of your choice
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 3-4 Tablespoons milk

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375º F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the crescent dough on the baking sheet. Generously spread a layer of cream cheese down the center of the dough. Roughly ⅓ of the dough should be covered.
  3. Repeat with a layer of jam directly over the cream cheese.
  4. Cut a fringe into the length of the dough on both sides by placing cuts (2-3 inches deep) every 1-2 inches.
  5. Take a section from one end and fold it diagonally over the filling. Repeat with the section of dough from the other side to create a braiding effect with the dough. Continue this pattern until all sections of dough are folded in.
  6. Take one end of the pastry and bend it until it faces the same direction as the other, creating a candy cane shape.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the oven to bake for at least 15 minutes.
  8. Meanwhile, combine the powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl to form a sugar glaze. Add milk and powdered sugar as needed until the glaze becomes syrup-like consistency.
  9. Remove the danish from the oven and let it cool.
  10. Drizzle with the sugar glaze and enjoy!
