Christmas Wassail for the Family

This holiday season, make memories with the whole family!

Try out this cozy hot wassail recipe that's friendly for all ages!

For many years, merrymaking has been a staple during the holiday season. A number of traditions have come from the long history of winter festivities, including gift-giving, joyful feasts, and even musical performances. In an effort to bestow good health and well wishes upon others, people of the past spread seasonal cheer by performing songs to friends and neighbors while sharing in the warmth of a delectable mulled cider.

Today, Christmas and winter wassail can be enjoyed without pre-rehearsed choral arrangements and even without age restrictions!

Take a look at our quick and easy recipe for apple wassail that is warm, inviting, and safe for the whole family to enjoy!

How to Make Family-Friendly Wassail

This beloved holiday beverage is known for its depth of flavors, though many people may not be aware of how easy it is to make! Serve up some homemade holiday cheer this winter by following our simple wassail recipe. All you will need is a few apples, apple cider, orange juice, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a bit of fresh ginger.

To begin, combine the juices, cider, ginger, and cinnamon sticks in a large pot. Stir to combine, and prep the apples by rinsing and patting them dry.

Simply placing all the ingredients in a pot and letting them simmer for some time will result in a holiday drink to be sure, but this next trick is one that will upgrade your homemade wassail to a whole new level of exquisite.

Pick up a single clove and force the stem into the flesh of the apple. Repeat until the apples have cloves around the entire surface. As the apples simmer, the distinctive, earthy, and spicy notes of the cloves will be absorbed into the fruit. Not only does this trick enhance the potency of winter flavors in the wassail, but it also makes it easier to enjoy since there is no need to strain!

Once the apples have been prepared, place them into the pot with the rest of the ingredients. Place the pot over medium-high heat and let it simmer for at least 35 minutes.

After the wassail has simmered, scoop the apples out of the pot and discard them.

Use a ladle to serve the wassail hot and garnish with a cinnamon stick or slice of fresh citrus.

While this recipe is one that can be enjoyed by the entire family, wassail is traditionally made with alcohol. If you are interested in adding a bit of this warmth back into the recipe, simply add a bit of bourbon before serving! That way, you can make it as strong as you would like!
