For a lot of people, it can be difficult to get all of the vital vitamins and nutrients they need from the food they eat. Sometimes, it’s just easier and a lot quicker to throw a low-energy meal together and get on with the day, especially in the morning when people are rushing to work, school, or wherever they need to be. While that may be a convenient solution at the time, it often leads to energy crashes within a few hours.
Having a full, energy-boosting meal in the morning is essential to keeping your productivity and energy levels consistent throughout the day, so having delicious, protein-packed recipes that are simple to make is a life saver!
This week, Table & Thyme is sharing a handful of tasty recipes for a breakfast done right. Our article includes how-to instructions for sweet and crispy Candied Bacon, creamy Simple Sausage Gravy, and cozy Whipped Coffee for an extra-energizing kick!
To whip up an irresistible batch of crispy, sweet, and savory bacon, you only need a few key ingredients! Gather a half-pound of thickly sliced bacon strips, some brown sugar, ground cayenne pepper, and a bit of black pepper and you are ready to go!
Before getting into the nitty-gritty of this recipe, go ahead and preheat your oven to 375º F, that way it will be ready to go by the time your bacon is finished being prepped. You’ll also want to line a baking sheet with foil to place the bacon slices on before baking.
In a preferably wide and shallow bowl, combine the brown sugar, cayenne pepper, and black pepper, and mix until they are well combined. Then, one at a time, dip each slice of bacon into the bowl, coating it in the sugar and spice mixture. Repeat on the other side and place the slice onto the prepared baking sheet. Continue until every slice has been coated and, if there is any leftover sugar and spice, sprinkle it over the slices on the baking sheet.
You do not want your bacon slices to be overlapping before going into the oven, especially since they are covered in sugar. To prevent the bacon from sticking together, take a moment to spread them out on the baking sheet. Then, pop them into the oven for about 15-20 minutes.
Pull out the bacon when it reaches your desired level of crispiness and savor the delicious aroma that will fill your kitchen before enjoying your tasty breakfast!
Deliciously crispy with a sweet and savory twist, this candied bacon is the perfect morning pick-me-up!
There’s nothing quite like a warm plate of homemade biscuits and gravy. Luckily, this recipe for sausage gravy is simple and just as cozy and inviting as Grandma’s! Simply grab some ground sausage (we used Jimmy Dean’s Premium Pork Sausage with Sage for a hint of herbal goodness), butter, flour, milk, and black pepper. Frozen sausage will work great for this recipe, so long as it is properly thawed ahead of time! If you plan on making biscuits and gravy and like the idea of all homemade, check out Allrecipes guide to making Basic Biscuits. Or, you can always grab a roll of ready-to-bake biscuits from the store like Pillsbury Grands or Trader Joe’s Buttermilk Biscuits!
To get this gravy started, begin cooking your sausage in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. This shouldn’t take too long, typically about 5-8 minutes as long as the meat has been thawed properly. Make sure to stir the sausage as it cooks so the meat cooks evenly and to prevent sticking or burning in the pan.
Once the sausage has cooked completely, remove it from the pan and set it aside, but leave the drippings in the pan.
Add the butter to the pan of sausage drippings and prepare yourself to begin your roux! With your whisk handy, carefully melt the butter into the drippings. Then, add the flour to the pan while continuously whisking. Forming a roux can be tricky for a lot of people, and the trick is to keep the movement going to combine the ingredients evenly and to do so fast enough that the roux does not start to color. It is a very quick process, so don’t expect it to take longer than about a minute!
Immediately pour milk into the pan and combine with the roux, but do so by pouring a little at a time. Just like the flour, whisk the ingredients constantly, even while you pour, to keep the movement constant. This will help ensure your gravy is deliciously smooth!
Once your milk is mixed in, stir in the black pepper and reduce the heat to medium-low. For about 10 minutes, be sure to whisk and stir your gravy and allow it to thicken in the pan.
After the gravy reaches your desired thickness, stir in the sausage.
Pour your homemade sausage gravy over warm biscuits or maybe even a bed of crispy hashbrowns for a hearty breakfast!

Most coffee-drinkers can agree that a good cup of coffee can truly make a difference in how you feel throughout the day. Not only does it make any morning better, but it also helps energize you for the day ahead! Luckily, this recipe doesn’t call for any elaborate ingredients or espresso machines, so you can enjoy a smooth, rich, and creamy cup of coffee without worry!
You can use any coffee you’d like, and you can even prepare it how you normally do! Of course, we recommend getting your hands on quality beans for a quality cup o’ Joe, which is why we reach for our Mesa House Blend, sweetly roasted with notes of cocoa and almond! We grind our beans and brew using a Chemex Pour Over Glass for a balanced and bold coffee, but any brew method will work. In fact, if you’re interested in exploring more methods of coffee brewing, you can check out our article Energize Your Mornings with Gourmet Coffee at Home for helpful tips and advice!
Aside from the coffee itself, all you’ll need is some heavy whipping cream, some maple syrup, and maybe a bit of cocoa or cinnamon powder for a tasty topping.
Once your coffee is brewed, go ahead and pour it into your cup, leaving at least an inch of room at the top. If you like your coffee on the creamier side, leave more space for your froth!
In a microwave-safe glass or cup, add the maple syrup and heavy whipping cream. You can attempt to mix the two using a spoon or even a milk frother, but it is much easier to combine them once warmed. Microwave the cream for about 20 seconds, remove it from the microwave, and froth for about 30 seconds.
Pour your warm, frothy creamy into your coffee and sprinkle with cinnamon or cocoa powder for a cozy finish!
Creamy, cozy, and just what the doctor ordered, this whipped coffee is the perfect way to start any day!
