Fall isn’t just a season, it’s a feeling, a state of being, and it’s magical! But, it always seems to slip away so easily. Why is that? Well, it may be because our romanticized expectations overshadow the reality of the real world, or because we don’t properly relish in the spectacularness of the season. Focusing on the former sounds like removing our amber-colored glasses, which isn’t very festive, so instead, let’s explore the 10 best things to do to make this fall a memorable one!
It’s not often that many of us in the South get to enjoy the outdoors without being wrapped in a blanket of humidity and mosquitoes. And while this is still true during the fall season, it is considerably less distracting than in the spring and summer. There are so many wonderful things to do outside this fall, so here are our top 5 fall festivities to put on your calendar this year!

What better way to get into the festive spirit of fall than to take a trip to the pumpkin patch? Bask in the crisp fall air as you stroll through a field of autumnal gourds with friends and family. Not only is it the perfect start to an evening of creative pumpkin carving, but it’s a fun photo op as well!
For those local to the Birmingham area, there are a few pumpkin patches nearby to plan a visit to before the season ends. The Great Pumpkin Patch in Hayden, Alabama offers a lot more festive fun than just the pumpkin patch with a petting zoo, train and pony rides, live music, and more!
For those looking to spend less time in the car, Helena Hollow offers the ultimate outdoor fall experience and entertainment beyond pumpkin hunting!

Pumpkins aren’t the only fun fall crop. Corn is a tasty vegetable that is both simple and so easy to love. Why? Because, as the CEO of corn once said, “it’s corn!”
Corn mazes offer a uniquely engaging experience for fall-lovers and it allows them to become completely immersed in the natural processes that define the season. Wandering the winding paths of a family-friendly corn maze (like 4D Farm in Cullman, Alabama) with the crunch of leaves under your feet is an awesome way to spend an autumn afternoon. And for those that prefer the things on the thrilling side, haunted corn mazes (such as Quinton, Alabama’s Spooktrail) are the perfect spooky season pastime!

Much like a visit to the pumpkin patch, a trip to an apple orchard is a relaxing way to enjoy this particular time of year. Grab a basket and fill it with fresh, sweet, and crisp apples to use in your favorite fall recipes! From apple chips and apple croissant dumplings to apple grilled cheese sandwiches, a day spent picking apples is a gift that keeps on giving!
Apple orchards may even offer other fall activities and specialties, too. Steele Orchard in Cullman, Alabama, for example, bakes fresh treats like apple pies and muffins and presses fresh apple cider for guests to enjoy during their visit!

If you’re not a huge fan of the outdoors, even in the fall, there are still plenty of ways to have fun! Spend the day at a museum for free on Museum Day, September 17, 2022! On Smithsonian Magazine’s annual Museum Day, participating museums and cultural centers offer visitors with Museum Day tickets free admission to view their collections. It’s a free and fun way to spend an autumn afternoon, so why not take advantage of it?
Not every museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, so be sure to check before heading out! For Alabamians looking to enrich their fall with a trip to the museum, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the historic Colonel Montgomery Gilbreath House in Guntersville are good places to start!

Fall isn’t just about cozy vibes and pumpkin spice, it’s also the season of spook! Celebrate all things Halloween by scaring your pants off at a local haunted house attraction! The Atrox Factory in Leeds, Alabama is known for being a terrifyingly entertaining experience and is ideal for fun with friends when the nightlife scene gets stale.
As the temperatures begin to drop, the thought of cozying up in a hand-me-down flannel and fuzzy socks by a warm fire while marshmallows roast onto chocolate-covered graham crackers becomes more and more enticing. For the days that are better off spent at home, there are still a ton of ways to commemorate the season. Here are our top 5 things to do at home this fall!
Picture it: an evening in with your closest friends, chatting by candlelight over a table of delicious food. Doesn’t that sound like a dream? Or, if you’re looking for some extra fun, make your dinner party a murder-mystery event filled with thrills, suspense, and maybe even costumes!
